I stayed at the Red Lion on Saturday 13th October 2007, having attended a wedding in York that day. We booked months ahead, as York Races were on that weekend. Because of the races being on, we had to pay £20 extra for the night, bringing the room price to £80 including breakfast, for two of us.
The room was nothing like the pictures on the website, but was adequate. However, our bed was broken. It was a divan and the lower half was totally broken and the bed was not in a fit state to sleep on. On seeing this, the man in charge, who said he was the owner's father, suggested one of us sleep lying on the edge of the double bed and the other one used the single bed. We said neither of us could use the double bed, as it was not fit to sleep in. He said they were fully booked and he couldn't do anything. After some discussion, during which he said he was not prepared to phone his son (on holiday) to discuss a refund, he agreed to a 50% discount. However, this meant that we ended up putting the mattress on the floor and sleeping on it there. This was not very comfortable. We received no apology and would certainly not recommend this hotel to anyone.
