I have just returned home from having had a Christmas meal with my family in the cellar bar of your hotel. I am writing to express my utter disappointment with both the standard of food and the quality of service.
Our party of four arrived at 1.30pm in order to have a drink in the bar before our meal which was booked for 2.15pm. The lady on reception was in her office engrossed in 'Facebook' when we arrived so we had no-one to ask about our stay.
We were directed by bar staff to the Cellar only to be told that we were too early and we should return to the ground floor bar. We did this and enjoyed the lovely ambience of the fire in the drawing room before returning to the Cellar Bar at 2.10pm.
We were greeted very positively by a very pleasant young waitress who made us feel very welcome when she took our order for food and drinks.
From this point on the experience deteriorated greatly. The starters were mediocre but far better quality than the main courses which comprised poor quality meat and undercooked vegetables. The service was poor because there were just two ladies serving, the youngest of whom continued to be as pleasant as she could whilst being rushed off her feet. The elder lady however was extremely unpleasant - in actual fact she was rude!
We didn't object to the delay between courses as the staff were busy and we had a lovely conversation between ourselves whilst awaiting our sweets & coffee.
It was when the restaurant began to empty at around 4pm that the service became even more unacceptable. Having booked a table for 2.15pm we did not believe it to be unusual to remain in the restaurant at 4.30pm - but clearly the staff thought it was as the music was turned off and the place became like the Marie Celeste.
Having paid £59.50 per head and an additional £30 for drinks plus those we had in the bar we felt extremely ripped off. No-one remained in the restaurant to wish us a Happy Christmas or enquired as to the quality of our experience. We were made to feel that we had well overstayed our welcome when we paid our bill and left at 4.40pm
We passed by reception on our way out only to find the same young lady still on 'Facebook'. I did interrupt her to express my dissatisfaction with our Christmas Day experience but was met with complete indifference.
Needless to say we will not be returning to the so called 'highly recommended' Grange Hotel.
