My wife and I have just returned from a lovely, relaxing weekend spent at the Piper's Tryst in Glasgow. Our old next door neighbour's daughter was actually getting married within the National Piping Centre, which sits just beside this lovely, cosy hotel and restaraunt, so we decided to make a weekend of travelling up to the big city and I am so glad we chose the Piper's Tryst as our accomodation!
Not only is it in a perfect central location (about 5 minutes walk from the local underground station and about 3 minutes from the bustling Suchiehall street) but you really are given a sense of being in a true Scottish location. Although you are close to the centre of town, we found the location to be very quiet at night and our comfortable rooms were the perfect place to enjoy a wee Scottish nightcap after a busy day. There are eight rooms in the hotel, I believe it was 7 twins and 1 double but another friend of ours who was also attending the wedding, had a camp bed set up in their room for their 15 year old. The next morning at breakfast he said he slept like a log!
The restaraunt within the Piper's Tryst was nothing short of superb. They serve a continenetal breakfast with the option of a cooked breakfast for an extra charge. But the highlight for me, I must say, was the dinner myself and my wife enjoyed on the Friday night. True Scottish produce, served by incredibly friendly and accomodating staff - and a fantastic (and extremely good value) wine list. My wife had a very fresh and well presented fish and chips, whilst I enjoyed my first proper haggis since moving to England 6 years ago - it was definately worth the wait!
I was only disapointed that we weren't staying for another night, but the meal at the wedding was also fantastic. However, all the more reason to return! Our waiter told us that the chefs only use seasonal produce so I look forward to seeing whats on the menu when we next visit - perhaps even this time we'll take in a show as the building is just opposite the Theatre Royal.
Overall - the Piper's Tryst is the perfect central belt location to enjoy a taste of the highlands - and a taste of their delicious haggis at the same time!
