Reviews of Princes Hotel

E Latham January 27, 2012
Returned last sunday 22/1/12 after a 2 night stay. What should have been booked as a luxury surprise break turned into an awful and dreadful nightmare. My husband and I were celebrating been together for 40 years and I had been looking forward to this break for twelve months from January 2011. He went into a local travel agents who worked with Bowens travel and this was what was recommended for January when he requested a coach trip type holiday (reason being he did not want to use own transport especially after the weather the uk suffered last year and risk us getting stuck in snow going to the venue or on return. The travel agent recommended this as the best option as it should have been a 3* plus and approximately 150 miles away from the midlands. Once we knew where we were going, on arrival outside of the hotel we thought it was a joke and were quite surprised when the driver got off and started to unload the luggage. A half coach full of travellers were to be staying in this wreck. The outside of the building had not had a coat of paint for years, plaster was also seen to be coming off, there were window boxes with weeds and dead flowers in plus the steps leading up to the entrance had been badly patched up. On arrival inside the situation got worse. Old woodchip wallpaper and artex ceilings with mixtures of old mismatch carpets somebadly worn plus furniture that was very out of date including the 'congress room' which was like an old school room had definately seen better days. A very cosy bar that was dark and compact was on the left, a small lift that was barely big enough for cases let alone people was opposite the reception. Up the stairs to room 103 was a big large crack in the wall. On the landing outside room 103 was a plinth with a vase type urn with plastic purple flowers in, yuk. In room 103 (an upgrade), basic to say the least. On yr immediate right was a small bathroom with an old suite with horrible lino covering and no blind or curtain was up at the window. A sliding door was provided with no lock mounted on a plinth of wood which came off on our arrival. A mix of horrible carpet, dark blue curtains covered dirty old window frames, a colourless duvet and frill was over the bed, which complimented some horrible clumpy pine furniture. There was no teapot just 2 cups and a kettle for the tea with some teabags. Mealtimes were interesting to. The basement restaurant was reached down some steps covered in a horrible dirty mushy green and cream swirl carpet, and then walls that were vivid bright orange and dirty pink doors added to the mix. Meals were basic to say the least. Breakfast was cornflakes, branflakes, porridge or fruit juice followed by full english (one rasher of bacon.....)plus toast with one cup of tea or coffee followed by 1 sachet of marmalade. Once again no teapots on the tables. Evening meals had to be preordered at breakfast. Saturday night was tomato soup and chicken. Entertainment was a laugh also, there was nothing on friday night but saturday night was eventful. It should have been bingo and music. Only half the guests bothered to turn up so a handful of guests had to endure listening to an old guy with a gammy leg playing a keyboard till 10pm. During the day he swept the litter off macdonalds car parks in eastbourne so he had to be up at 6am. A morning excursion was to a very windswept Beachy Head then on to a garden centre called 'paradise park'. All in all this was a very disappointing break but this was not luxury by any means. People have been complaining about this hotel since 2007 regarding major refurbishments required concerning old furniture, bad wallpaper and carpets, broken bathrooms, cockroach infestations etc, dirty mould on walls and ceilings. This would be a great candidate for the Hotel Inspector with Alex Polizzi on channel 5 tv. They would have a great time making this over. The company of Bowens travel have been informed of this fiasco and are currently fully investigating our concerns major issues here need sorting before recommending this to any othervulnerable couples or guests and it will be interesting to see what develops. We have been left completely traumatised by this event and have vivid memories for all the wrong reasons of this weekend away. My husband should not have been recommended by the tour rep in the travel shop that this was a suitable luxury break, I have been assured that these mystery breaks are not classed as luxury breaks and my husband was completely misled into thinking it was a very nice break. Eastbourne when busy in the summertime is a popular place, but in January with the exception of the town centre it is shut down and nowhere is open until the start of the main season. We shall not be booking any more breaks mystery or otherwise because we dont want a repeat of what humiliation and embarressment we both suffered as a result. Bowens travel must smarten their act if they are going to persuade future customers to go on these mystery breaks, their hotels certainly dont live up to the reputation they are supposed to be as we know only too well. We were very disappointed and extremely angry with what money had been paid and have requested a full refund for it. I shall persevere until I get it back no matter how long it takes.
